| After turning our backs on the Tianming coffee shop, my party suggested that we hit Yamagata Restaurant. Yamagata is a mountainous province on Japan's Honshu island. Your friend and humble narrator has fond memories of driving a Nissan X-Trail through meters of snow in Yamagata's mountains, so it was a go.
The restaurant is a bit hidden away from view, but you can see the lantern advertising Tempura (天婦羅) and on the wall 山形 ヤマガタ.
Inside Japanese bland, but very spacious. Yamagata is a cold area, so they also have the so -called horigodatsu in this restaurant. You sit on the floor, but there is a hole (hori) under the table for your legs. In winter a heatable blanket is spread around the table, the kotatsu, to keep you warm.
The menu advertised tabehoudai und nomihoudai.(食べ放題、飲み放題), eat and drink as much as you can at fixed price, starting at RMB 98 for only food and ending at RMB 158 per head for both. In Shanghai you only find this in the crappiest of all places. Yours Truly got mighty concerned.
Since my party eats usually like a hunger-crazed food-addict, I immediately chose the RMB 158 per head course and began my rampage through the menu. The menu comes in three languages: Japanese, Chinese and Illiterate (photos - but not for all dishes). Much to your friends and humble narrators delight, the waitress was completely fluent in Japanese.
The delight continued when food and drinks hit the table, great quality, very good preparation, original flavours. One of the goodies, called okonomiyaki (お好み焼き), is actually Japanese junk food, which you usually prepare yourself in specialized restaurants in Japan. Here it was kitchen prepared, but particularly good.
Sashimi, maki, meat, all fresh and good. A both-thumbs-up.
For top-class Japanese food and wider variety, the Japanese restaurant at the Changshu Hotel still rules, but for a great casual dinner and getting nicely sloshed at reasonable expense, Yamagata is an excellent choice.

| They do have an English menu, but also one with pictures that makes it easier ...
There seems to be more options in the Japanese menu, but since you speak some Japanese, guess it won't be a problem ...
Give us your impressions when you tried that place ...
